Digimon Survive — Our Review

TamerDex's take. Short version: a genuinely gripping, mature Digimon story — but it's mostly a visual novel with light tactical battles, so know what you're buying.

Play it if
You want a dark, character-driven story with meaningful choices and multiple endings.
Think twice if
You expected a monster-raiser — this is ~70% reading, with occasional tactical fights.

What it gets right

The story is the reason to play — a genuinely tense, sometimes bleak survival tale where your choices change who lives and dies and which of four endings you reach. The cast is strong, the atmosphere is excellent, and the Digimon designs and voice work are a treat for fans. The grid-based battles have a clean type triangle and satisfying in-battle digivolutions.

Where it drags

It is a visual novel first — expect long stretches of reading between battles, a slow burn, and far fewer fights than a typical RPG. Fans hoping for a raising sim were caught off guard (it was review-bombed at launch for exactly this), so set expectations: the gameplay is light and the pacing is deliberate.

Who it's for

If you enjoy story-heavy games and don't mind reading, it's one of the most memorable Digimon stories ever told. Critics landed around 81 on Metacritic, with a more divided fan response. Our take: a superb Digimon story and a modest game — go in for the narrative and the endings, not the battles.

This is TamerDex's own opinion, not a scored outlet review. Reception via Metacritic and OpenCritic.
